Women In Construction

As of 2020, women account for 25% of the construction workforce.

The SSI NWA team sat down with Lesley and Maren and heard what they had to say about being in the construstion industry as women.

Q: What made you choose a career in construction?

Lesley - Growing up, most of my family was in the construction industry so I was drawn to it at a very young age. As a woman in the construction industry, my decision was driven by a combination of passion and desire for challenge. I’ve always been fascinated by how things are built and the impact that construction projects have on communities. Additionally, I want to break stereo types and prove that women can thrive in fields traditionally dominated by men. I believe it’s important to have diverse perspectives in construction, and I want to inspire other women to consider careers in this area. The opportunity to contribute to impactful projects, while also paving the way for future generations, is incredibly fulfilling for me.

Q: What advice would you give to someone starting their career in construction?

Maren - Keep an open mindset to all possibilities, I have learned that the construction industry is built on relationships and collaborating together to get to the end result, building together! Take your time building those strong relationships, they are your future!

Q. What skills and perspectives do you think women bring to the table in construction that are needed in this field?

Lesley - Women bring a diverse range of skills and perspectives to the construction field that are essential for its growth and success.

Here are a few:

  • Collaboration and communication
  • Attention to Detail
  • Problem Solving Skills
  • Empathy and Leadership
  • Diversity of Thinking
  • Commitment to Safety
  • Sustainability Focus
  • Mentorship and Role Modeling

Maren - These are the skills I feel are important in the industry.

  • Collaboration and Communication: Women tend to excel in interpersonal skills, such as effective communication and collaboration. These skills are crucial in construction, where teamwork, coordination between different trades, and clear communication between project managers, workers, and clients can significantly impact project outcomes. This can lead to better project coordination and fewer misunderstandings.

These skills help to diversify teams, improve project results, and contribute to a more inclusive work environment.

Q: What are a few more tips you could give that you wish someone would have told you when you were beginning the in the industry?

Lesley -

  • Invest in reputable training programs or apprenticeships to gain hands-on experience and industry knowledge.
  • Familiarize yourself with safety protocols. A proactive approach to safety shows your commitment to a secure work environment.
  • Learn various aspects of the trade, from carpentry to project management, to increase your versatility and value.
  • Develop strong communication skills to enhance collaboration and efficiency on the job site.
  • Build connections within the industry for mentorship opportunities and potential job leads.
  • Accept constructive criticism as a chance to grow and improve your skills.

Maren -

  1. Embrace Challenges: Construction can be physically and mentally demanding, but it’s also rewarding. Embrace the challenges that come your way as they will make you stronger and more capable.

  2. Don’t Let Gender Define You: While the industry may still be male-dominated, remember that your gender doesn’t limit your ability to succeed. Focus on being the best at what you do and don’t let stereotypes hold you back.

  3. Celebrate Your Successes: Take pride in every accomplishment, big or small. You’re carving a path for other women in the industry, and each success adds to your confidence and the opportunities for others coming after you.

You’ve chosen a powerful field where you can make a lasting impact—go for it!
